01 about lillian

I have been a celebrant for 13 years, and I must say that it has been many wonderful years filled with romance, excitement, challenges and diversity!

I am also a qualified celebrant trainer, a role which takes me all around NSW and interstate.

Aside from my role as a celebrant and trainer, I love to travel, watch mindless reality television to clear my cluttered mind, go to art house movies, eat spicy food, and finish it off with a gelato. I also like to exercise hard, and hike mountains. I cherish spending time with my family and grandchildren. My husband is my greatest love and best friend for more than 28 years. We laugh a lot together, and always try to find the humour in most things, focusing on what’s important, and brushing the rest off.

I suppose my sage attitude has come with age!

The reason I became a celebrant

We were married overseas by a celebrant. He was a nice enough person, however the ceremony only included the legally required basics. Some years later, I attended a family wedding. The ceremony was officiated by a celebrant, and I said to the people standing beside me, “I could do this.”  They jumped on me saying, “You’d be great Lillian! Really! Do it, do it!” I thought they were just trying to humour me. The next day, I made enquiries, enrolled in the course, and here I am.

My role as a celebrant

I believe my role encompasses more than what we are required to do as stated in the Code of Practice for Marriage Celebrants. Weddings are not just about ticking boxes and getting the job done. There are emotions involved, and personal preferences to style and character. Family dynamics and sensitivities to a relationship may often require emotional intelligence, an open mind, and a big heart. Speaking from experience, weddings do not always go to plan! Being able to think on your feet, and having a high care factor is a valuable asset as a celebrant.

- I take the time to get to know the couple, their personalities, their relationship and what is important to them and their marriage

- We discuss the ceremony in detail, taking into account not only what you want, but also what you do not want, which is just as important.

- I consider every aspect of a ceremony, including the guests’ arrival, walking down the aisle, the photographers/videographers, how and where to stand, photographic angles, options with saying your vows, music, readers, adverse situations, weather, and nerves!

- We discuss the logistics of the ceremony and how to deal with any situations that may affect the smooth running of the ceremony ie. guest arrival times, if there are other events in the area which may affect parking, what if it rains, hot weather, irritating insects, rowdy guests, and the list goes on!

- If required, we go to the venue to run through the processional and the positioning of the bridal party

- I create and deliver a meaningful ceremony that is personalised to reflect your own values and style

I greatly value the relationships often developed with my couples after their wedding. Many of my past couples keep in touch with me, many become good friends. My Instagram and personal Facebook page are full of past couples uploading images of their new babies and growing families.

On a sadder note, I’m often requested to conduct the funerals of my past couples’ family members. Having already met the families during past wedding procedures, there is an established connection based on trust and a feeling of comfort. It is a great honour to be piece together a person’s life, and give them a farewell that is respectful and heartfelt.

What makes a good celebrant?

I believe that being a good celebrant is having the ability to open your heart to people from all walks of life, having no prejudice, being a good listener, taking the time to understand couples, and what they expect from their ceremony, whether it be for their wedding day, a name giving celebration, or a funeral.

Lillian Lyon is truly amazing. She went above and beyond in her role as celebrant from the first moment we met. Firstly advising us about other people that we could use, from photographers to musicians to helping us plan and structure our wedding ceremony. She provided us with so many little golden nuggets of information that we used to make our day so special people are now calling it the Hollywood wedding. However much more than the help we received at this pre planning phase, Lillian wrote and delivered one of the most heartfelt ceremony’s I have ever witnessed. I think because we had met a few times prior to the big day Lillian already knew us and understood what we were about. She spoke so beautifully about marriage and the history of our relationship and this really set the scene. When it came to the vows she wheeled in behind us and whispered our vows to each other, like a true professional that people thought we had learned them off by heart. At the end of the ceremony, which others have commented as the "most romantic" wedding they had ever experienced, Lillian and my new wife embraced, and with tears in our eyes we offered her the most heartfelt thank you that we could muster. Lillian was touched, and so she should be as there was only one real star at our wedding. That was Lillian Lyon. 11 out of 10!

Dearest Lillian, you were actually the first person we engaged after getting engaged and finding out our auspicious dates because I knew we just had to have you as at celebrant. That was one of the best decisions for our wedding.

You were great from the start. You took the time to go through everything thoroughly when we met and gave us so many good tips for the day not just ceremony related.

I’ve been to rehearsals before but how you run your rehearsal was so thoughtful. You positioned us so good camera angles could be achieved, how so many of our close friends and family could be involved and you even went to cover seating arrangements.... amazing!

Then for the day, it just got even better! My wedding nerves were controlled because you had the ceremony covered. You are truly the best in your field and we can see your passion transgress through your effort and skills.

Lillian, we just want to say a MASSIVE THANK YOU for being the one to marry us!

The ceremony was such an important part for Matt and I and we’re pleased to say you nailed it.

You are so wonderful at your job. From the initial meeting you were so lovely and kind and we were impressed with your attention to detail. Throughout the process you constantly kept us up-to-date and provided us with SO MUCH information and ceremony reading suggestions.

Our families were so impressed with how you spoke and conducted yourself at the rehearsal – knowing they were happy made Matt and I very happy! On the day, you were so bright and bubbly – you put us both at ease and made us feel so comfortable. Once again your attention to detail reminded us that we sure did choose the right celebrant!! You’re honestly the best Lillian.

Thank you for everything – keep doing what you’re doing!

Love, Matt and Kristen Brandley xxx

Wow, what a weekend! Luke and I had the most incredible time!
Thank you so much, the ceremony was beautiful and exactly what we wanted. Appreciate all your little tips and advice on the day, I wish I remembered your tip about the bug spray! Haha.  Some of our guests were impressed and thought Luke memorised the vows, as they couldn't see you talking. Haha :)
Thanks again, you're an absolute pro, and made us feel nice and relaxed. We hope you enjoyed the day as much as we did.

We just wanted to say a huge thank you for being a part of our day. Also thank you for your patience, as we realised it was running quite late. But you managed the whole affair with such style and grace. We received so much positive feedback about how you delivered the ceremony. It was definitely a casual affair and also a very funny one! Which was a true reflection of who we are. I don’t think we could have asked for more. We wont be hesitating to recommending your services to our family and friends. Thanks again, love your style!

“Pure perfection” are the words that come to mind when asked about Lillian’s services from our guests. Every little detail was taken care of right down to the fake bouquet and rings at the rehearsal, so we could concentrate on just enjoying the moment. The whole process was just seamless. Lillian’s professionalism and decorum throughout the ceremony had a lot of people commenting and it would not have been the same without her. She made sure we were completely relaxed and ready for our big day and I have no hesitations whatsoever recommending her to anyone that is looking for a genuine, down to earth approach to one of the most exciting days of your life.

Darren & Kellie Ah Sam Royal Botanic Gardens Sydney

Lillian, first we would like to thankyou for all your support and your exceptional service. The wedding was our dream wedding. Organising a wedding had its highs and lows and overall it’s a stressful process, but throughout the whole process there was one thing I didn’t have to worry about – you made the official side of getting married such a breeze, Darren and I are grateful for your services as you made our ceremony such a beautiful memory. Our guests, family, and friends, were all complimenting on how beautiful the civil ceremony was – you made it all about “us”. It was such a comfort to arrive at the garden in the rush that I was in and to see you there waiting for me. Everything went according to plan and I knew in the bottom of my heart if it didn’t – you are there to sort things out.

Danny & Melissa Cai Curzon Hall, Marsfield

I couldn’t have asked for a nicer or more genuine person to conduct my wedding ceremony. Lillian conducts herself in a very professional manner and takes her role very seriously, while also being an incredibly warm and friendly person who really cares about people. She has incredible attention to detail and every part of the planning process was covered thoroughly. She also gave my husband and I a good amount of information, both verbally and written. Having a rehearsal with her was also very useful and was the nicest part of the wedding preparations. Lillian made our ceremony so special and I would not hesitate to recommend her to all our family and friends.
